ENGLISH - Edwin Landseer was one of the most popular British painters in the nineteenth century. From the age of thirteen he exhibited drawings of animals at the Royal Academy. He was Queen Victoria's favourite artist and a good friend of Charles Dickens. The usual subject of Landseer's pictures is animals. His paintings carry in general a moral message and, sometimes, are sentimental too. Dignity and Impudence greatly contributed to Landseer's success as an artist. It exemplifies Landseer’s tendency to give human attributes to animals. The painter contrasts the large, dignified bloodhound with the small, mischievous terrier. These dogs, ‘Grafton’ and ‘Scratch’ were both owned by Landseer’s friend, Jacob Bell, who commissioned the painting.
Landseer is also the author of the four bronze lions that can be seen at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London.
CASTELLANO - Edwin Landseer fue uno de los pintores más populares del siglo XIX. Desde los trece años exhibió sus dibujos de animales en la Royal Academy de Londres. Fue el pintor preferido de la reina Victoria. También entabló una fuerte amistad con el escritor Charles Dickens. La obra de Landseer comprende numerosas escenas de animales, las que a menudo conllevan un mensaje moral o sentimental. Dignidad e Insolencia es una obra que condujo a Landseer a la fama y ejemplifica su tendencia a dar atributos humanos a los animales, un rasgo típicamente suyo. El pintor contrasta el carácter sereno de un sabueso con el aspecto travieso de un terrier. Ambos canes—acaso mejor conocidos como ‘Grafton’ y ‘Scratch’—eran propiedad de otro amigo de Landseer, Jacob Bell, quien encargó esta obra.
Los cuatro grandes leones que custodian la base de la Columna de Nelson (Trafalgar Square, Londres), por otra parte, son también obra de Landseer.
