Inesperados y refrescantes eran los métodos de la profesora de arte de Akerman en 1979, la señora Iglesias. Promovía la auto-expresión en una Argentina de represión general (1976-83). En cierta oportunidad llegó a clase con reproducciones de varias obras maestras del arte occidental y le pidió a cada alumno que eligiese una que le pareciera interesante y luego la reelaborase a su modo. Habiendo percibido cierta ternura en una imagen neoclásica de François Gérard, Akerman eligió Psique recibiendo el primer beso de Eros. Preservó la pose inicial de las figuras, pero las representó en términos completamente surreales. La resultante de ello fue una témpera titulada Nada de bésame mucho. Una vez acabada fue exhibida y premiada en el Ministerio de Educación, en Buenos Aires.
Aquel ejercicio de 1979 le brindó a Akerman la oportunidad de activar su imaginación e inventiva. Al buscar “su modo” de rehacer la imagen de Gérard, Akerman adquirió Surrealism, un libro por Schneede.* El texto estaba en inglés, idioma que por aquel entonces Akerman apenas comprendía. Con todo, Akerman se interesó ante todo y por sobre todo por la imaginería de los surrealistas. El libro de Schneede incluía buenas reproducciones de la obra de Magritte, Dalí, Miró, Ernst, Tanguy y otros.
Unexpected and stimulating were the methods of Prof. Iglesias, who was Akerman's art teacher in 1979. She encouraged self-expression in an Argentina of general repression (1976-83). One day she showed some art reproductions to her students, asking each of them to pick out one that interested him, to later remake the chosen image in his own way. Having perceived certain tenderness in François Gérard’s Psyche receiving the First Kiss of Eros, Akerman choose that Neoclassical image. He kept the pose of Gérard’s figures, but represented them in complete surreal terms. The result was a gouache entitled Nada de bésame mucho (Nothing of kissing me a lot, 1979). Once finished, the work was exhibited and prized in the Ministry of Education, in Buenos Aires.
That 1979 exercise offered Akerman an opportunity to activate his imagination and inventiveness. Trying to find "his way" to remake Gérard’s image, Akerman bought a book by Schneede, Surrealism.* It was in English, a language Akerman could hardly understood then. Even so, he was interested above all in the imagery of the Surrealists and Schneede’s book included good reproductions of artworks by Magritte, Dalí, Miró, Ernst, Tanguy, and others.
