La bella y la bestia es un cuento tradicional europeo. Aunque con múltiples variantes, su origen es "Cupido y Psique," una historia incluida en El Asno de Oro, el texto de Apuleyo del siglo II E.C. Conocido alternativamente como las Metamorfosis, dicho libro es la única novela latina completa que sobrevive hasta hoy. Se trata de un trabajo alegórico-picaresco que relata cómo el joven Lucio, víctima de un hechizo fallido que lo transforma en asno (aunque sin perder sus facultades intelectuales, salvo el lenguaje), pasa por varios amos y múltiples aventuras. Domina el tono humorístico, si bien el texto presenta también reflexiones filosófico-religiosas. Es una obra imaginativa, irreverente y divertida que relata las increíbles aventuras de Lucio metamorfoseado. Detrás de su apariencia de asno, Lucio percibe cosas extrañas (a menudo intercaladas como cuentos dentro de la novela) hasta que Isis le devuelve su forma humana. Una interpolación desarrolla una de las más bellas muestras de la cuentística de la Antigüedad Clásica: se trata de la fábula de Cupido y Psique (Eros y Psique, Metamorfosis, libros IV-VI), el relato más extenso de la novela que cuenta las tribulaciones del alma (Psique) para alcanzar al amor (Eros) y la inmortalidad.
La unión de dos seres a través del beso como agente transformador es frecuente en la imaginería de Akerman en 1986 y 1988. Ella se da en La bella y la bestia y otros trabajos tales como Pareja, Activar el espacio, Mutaciones de fibras e Irreductibles como el agua. Beauty and the Beast is a traditional fairy tale, with numerous variants across Europe. Its origin is a fable entitled "Cupid and Psyche," which is included in a book by Apuleius, The Golden Ass (second century C.E.).* Also known as the Metamorphoses, Apuleius' text is the only Latin novel that has survived in its entirety. It is an imaginative, irreverent, and amusing work that relates the ludicrous adventures of one Lucius, who experiments in magic and is accidentally turned into an ass. In this guise he hears and sees many unusual things, until escaping from his predicament in a rather unexpected way. Within this frame story are found multiple digressions, the longest among them being the tale of Cupid and Psyche.
The union of two beings via a kiss as a transforming agent is frequent in Akerman’s imagery of 1986 and 1988. It takes place in Beauty and the Beast and in other works such as Couple, To Activate the Space, Fiber Mutations and Irreducible like Water. Beauty and the Beast (1986) in particular is an image that has points in common with and diverges from Nothing of Kissing Me a Lot (1979).**

* Lucius Apuleius Platonicus, 123-180, was a Romanized Berber who described himself as "half-Numidian, half-Gaetulian", remembered most for his bawdy picaresque Latin novel, the Metamorphoses, otherwise known as Aureus asinus, where the Latin word aureus, golden, connoted an element of blessed luckiness.
