Según Henry Geldzahler, cuando pasan unos diez o doce años, el arte deja de ser algo perturbador, dado que la obra de arte con capacidad de sacudir al espectador termina tarde o temprano por reducirse a sí misma a lo trivial o lo bello.*
Sin embargo, un detalle tomado de un conocido tríptico pintado por Bacon invalida tales ideas y demuestra precisamente todo lo contrario. Sesenta y cuatro años luego de haber sido ejecutado, el aquí-ilustrado detalle del trabajo de Bacon, es decir, de su desfigurado arte figurativo de posguerra, demuestra que lejos de haberse reducido a lo simplemente prosaico o lo estéticamente complaciente, el arte de Bacon sigue hoy siendo algo problemático e inquietante.
