Virginia Woolf va escriure que "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction". Charlotte Brontë i les seves germanes no en tenien, de diners, però vivien en una casa per a elles, buida de marits o canalla. Van poder escriure (semi)ficció a canvi de renunciar al rol propi d'una dona de l'època.
