Estilo auricular. Tipo de ornamentación hecha en metal a partir de formas orgánicas que recuerdan partes del cuerpo humano y en las que funden otras extravagancias imitativas de las formas naturales. El estilo se llama auricular porque recuerda la modulación fuerte e indefinible de una oreja. Surge a principios del siglo XVII en Utrecht y se desarrolla en los Países Bajos y Europa central (Joaquín Lorda, Classical Architecture: The Grand Manner, Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Navarra, 2008, www.unav.es/ha/002-ORNA/002-ORNA.html ).
La expresión “estilo auricular” proviene del alemán Öhrmuschelstil (estilo del pabellón de la oreja). En holandés, al diseño en estilo auricular se lo denomina Kwabornament, es decir, "ornamento blando."

Auricular style. Term used to describe a type of ornament popular in the seventeenth century, characterized by smooth, curved and rippling forms resembling the human ear. In its fully developed form, this highly plastic style is found only in metalwork. The style in this medium is characterized by the use of amorphous, lobate scrolls and embossed, relief ornament that emphasize the malleable nature of the metal. At its most extreme, it exaggerates this quality by suggesting that objects were modelled in a semi-molten state (The Concise Grove Dictionary of Art, Oxford UP, 2002).

La diéresis o crema sobre la "O" de Öhrmuschelstil es por lo visto un ornamento auricular, ya que en alemán el término empleado es Ohrmuschelstil a secas.
